An article that should disgust you -- A California Orange County (tea party activist) Republican allegedly sent an offensive Obama email (depicting the President as an ape) - from Yahoo! News. The County Republican Chairman, Scott Baugh was quoted as saying,

. . . that he wants an ethics investigation into the incident.
"It's just highly inappropriate, it's a despicable message, it drips with racism and I think she should step down from the committee," said Baugh.

If you live in an area where there is a lot of drilling for natural gas, this recent study found that fracking for natural gas is more hazardous than burning coal - according to Yahoo! News.

Iran's recent activation of the Bushehr nuclear facility means that the U.S. should significantly change its approach to negotiations. "In this new post-Bushehr reality, it is no longer realistic for the West to be stuck in a "no enrichment," "no break-out" posture. Now, Iran is signaling a readiness to negotiate its nuclear posture with a proposal for Russia or China, or even others, to jointly participate in an enrichment facility based in Iran. This constitutes a clear pointer in the direction of a safeguarded solution. But can the US and Europe take the hint this time?"

In China, Ambassador Verveer will speak in Shanghai at the All-China Women’s Federation’s International Forum on Women in Urban Development and Commemoration of the 15^th Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women. She will travel to Beijing to follow up on the last US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue on women and development, and to discuss the proposed U.S.-China Women Leaders Forum. During her stay in China, Ambassador Verveer will also meet with civil society leaders and government officials.

“The wind power sector is illustrative of China’s accomplishments, as installed wind power capacity has gone from 0.567 GW in 2003 to 12.2 GW in 2008. Plans already exist to grow China’s wind power capacity to 100 GW by 2020. . . "

Now that the book is available . . .

It is a good time to reflect a bit more on one of the the latest big discussions in major writings about politics, Obama's Wars, by Bob Woodward. In a 9/22 post I observed that the book is:

Typical Woodward fare — inside info, who’s feuding with whom, sequencing of how it all happened, etc. I recommend reading articles about the book because they confirmed for me what I had been intuiting all along. As all of the drama unfolded, I speculate that the military intransigence necessitated the timeline tactic: “OK, I’ll try it your way, but not for long. You’ve got until mid 2011 to produce results…”

In reading the following articles, once again I am left mystified as to why the author has such access to all the main players. I speculate that it is his reputation for even-handedness, accurate quoting and professionalism. This piece, "New Woodward expose details Afghan policy battles" is from Reuters (9/22/10). To summarize:

Members of President Barack Obama's national security team have waged an internal battle over Afghan policy that has been marked by bitter infighting, according to a new book by journalist Bob Woodward.

The most trustworthy news source, in my opinion is the Financial Times. On 9/22/10, they headlined, Book to expose US rifts on Afghan policy. The full story is well worth the read. It illustrates how the President was quite willing to let his "team of rivals" fully debate this most difficult of dilemmas, what to do about Afghanistan (and Pakistan). To quote its summary:

Senior advisers to Barack Obama have waged bitter battles and turf wars over Afghan policy, according to Bob Woodward, the veteran Washington Post reporter

Second only to the FT as a major news source, is the New York Times. According to Peter Baker, (9/22/10), the Woodward book says Afghanistan divided the White House, That seems utterly predictable, given all the expertise, experience and strong personalities around the table. To quote,

Some in the White House have doubts about President Obama's Afghan strategy, this new book reports.

The final headline, "White House seeks to limit fallout from Afghan war book," comes via Reuters on 9/22/10. Again to summarize:

The White House on Wednesday sought to limit any fallout from a new book that chronicles bitter infighting among President Barack Obama's aides who helped craft his Afghan war strategy, with some doubting it can succeed.

The White House, rightly, emphasized that the strong lengthy debate was necessary to reach the best conclusion, reflecting the President's policy decisions as Commander in Chief. It appears to be the best of Obama finding common ground -- pragmatic, reasoned and following the advice of the military, though not blindly.

I conclude with this little opinion blurb from CQ Behind the Lines, by David C. Morrison - 9/23/10:

What's in a name? Changing what the government calls its enemies is not a fix for this proposed major over reach of presidential authority. The bill in question could potentially violate the constitutionally protected habeas corpus rights of U.S. citizens. Designating a person suspected of a terrorist act as an "unprivileged enemy belligerent," rather than an enemy combatant makes no difference to the person who might be erroneously and indefinitely held without cause. Glenn Greenwald is correct to be alarmed. We really need to keep our eyes on this situation. "In a Texas precinct" . . . Jon writes:

I have to share my experience of today. While I was voting, I overheard a conversation among the rethug officials, two women and one man. One of the women started talking about the earthquake in Chile, and the other woman started in talking about the mention of earthquakes and disasters in the Bible. They began saying that the recent quakes in Haiti and Chile were sure signs that the world is going to end soon. Then the man brought up the info about the Mayan calendar having the year 2012 as the end. I had a very difficult time not laughing out loud!

I hung around my voting booth so I could listen. A man who appeared to be the judge/observer continued to add more so-called end of times signs. When I had enough humor for the day and was ready to leave, one of the ladies said she was SURE we are in the end times, and again said 2012 was it. She had already started to get her affairs in order; whatever that means.

As I walked out past the Democrats' table, I laughed and asked how they were going to survive for 12 hours listening to the rethug drivel. They just smiled.

Thanks to Marcy Wheeler, "emptywheel" at Firedoglake, for the link to this very fine post. In it Greenwald makes the very potent argument that the trend in the current political establishment is to demand less of the rule of law in the fight against terrorists than either President Reagan or G.W. Bush. These policy stances are cast as normal, while support for criminal trials, adherence to habeas corpus, etc. are cast as those of "the leftist fringe." It is becoming a sad day for America that we have seem to have less respect for civil liberties than was shown in the Reagan and Bush administrations.

Last year when I celebrated the Big 4-0, I wasn’t sure how middle age would suit me. “Middle age,” in fact, sounded like a term I couldn’t imagine applying to myself. Given the fact that it feels like I finally finished graduate school only yesterday, it seems physically impossible that I could be over forty. But, it really is true when they say time speeds up as you age, for my long-awaited graduation from graduate school happened over five years ago, not yesterday. My twenties were the decade I married and moved to New England; my thirties were the decade I finally finished school, divorced, and came into my own; and my forties are…now. I’m not exactly sure how I got here so fast, but here I am, waking up to “middle age.”

And therein lies the kicker: it turns out I actually like being “middle aged.” I don’t necessarily like that term, as it sounds middling and mediocre: not quite young and not quite old, just a nondescript mishmash of This and That. I don’t like the way that many folks utter the term “middle aged” as if it were an epithet synonymous with “out-of-touch and stuck-in-a rut” rather than “a period of life when you’re still active enough to do fun things and wise enough to enjoy them sensibly.” But despite my initial indecision about how I’d like being 40, I’m finding that being a “woman of a certain age” really suits me. I’m beginning to think, in fact, that I’ve been a 40-something-year-old all along, and only now am I behaving in a way that is age-appropriate. Finally, the sprinkling of gray hair that looked so strange when I started getting it in high school looks entirely appropriate on a 40-something head: a badge of wisdom rather than an unfortunate genetic inheritance.

Like many other Democrats, I was more than pleased with President Obama's assessment of the state of the union. My reasons: minimum high rhetoric, limited ambitions, occasionally even handed between political parties, call to the better angels in Republicans, took on the recent controversial Supreme Court decision, focused on jobs, but did not walk away from health care reform.
